Customs Compliance Specialist

We seek an experienced Customs specialist to join our Operations team in this full-time role:
Customs Compliance Specialist
This critical role involves reviewing and clearing QC flags in ITMR4 (Descartes) software and, either directly or supporting Customs staff, responding to compliance and client requests. Courtney uses OCR/AI software which automates some data flows. The incumbent will be expected to stay up-to-date on changing compliance requirements, develop Courtney’s institutional knowledge, and continually enhance the competence of the Customs team.
With respect to the Compliance part of the role, you can expect to:
- Oversee, deliver and improve quality control (QC)/daily audit program
- Monitor and ensure that customs operations are compliant with regulations and laws
- Develop and deliver compliance policies and procedures to manage risk
- Stay current on CBSA and related legislation and compliance programs
- Liaise with CBSA, CFIA, and other government departments on regulatory matters
- Facilitate customs rulings, refunds and related items
- Facilitate effective hand-offs between Courtney and PMK (US customs brokerage).
You will also take a leadership role in Training & Business Development where you will:
- Support the 9 members of the Customs team to meet Customs compliance standards and further their classification skills and Customs knowledge
- Oversee HS Tariff Classification
- Support new client inquiries, sales process and new client onboarding
- Advise clients on compliance matters including legislation, regulations, initiatives, rulings and duty deferrals, etc.
- Contribute to corporate planning and team development.
The successful candidate will bring:
- CTCS certification (or near completion), or equivalent knowledge and/or License
- At least 8 to 10 years’ overall Customs brokerage experience including Customs clearance, and a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in Customs compliance
- Strong knowledge of Canadian customs laws, tariffs, and trade regulations
- Strong software skills and ability to report effectively
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Leadership with a client service mindset and team collaboration skills
- US Customs knowledge would be an asset, as there is much interface with PMK International LLC (sister company to Courtney)
