The CBSA is working on streamlining their processes and creating better tools for managing importer activities. The “CARM” (CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management) roll-out will mean significant changes to the interactions between this federal agency, importers, their customs brokers, and others.

While system updates at CBSA have been long overdue, it’s likely there will be curves ahead for some of our clients.

UPDATE: (We knew there’d be curves in the road.)

Courtney started communicating with our clients more than a year ago – sending updates and hosting webinars to assist with transition to the new system.

Since that time, the CBSA has reassessed their and the industry’s readiness for final release and has determined there is still work to be done before it’s fully operational. The original date for Release 2 was May 2022; that date has been moved to October 2023. (For what each release delivered/will deliver, go to the CBSA webpage from here.) 

We advise that our clients continue to onboard into the system as early as you can. At last count, only 15% of Canadian importers had registered. While a slightly higher percentage of Courtney clients have onboarded, for the others, leaving it to the last minute could lead to a lot of frustration and inconvenience as 85% of importers try to merge onto the highway.
