Yantian Express still in process of unloading damaged containers

Hapag-Lloyd's MV "Yantian Express" which, in early January, suffered a major fire that resulted in both the vessel and a proportion of the cargo becoming either fire or water damaged, is still in the process of unloading fire impacted containers and and performing inspections of potentially damaged containers at a yard in Freeport, Bahamas.

The container line says that it now anticipates that the discharge and door end inspections of the potentially impacted containers remaining on board will take approximately two weeks from now to be completed.

As already advised, Hapag-Lloyd is still exploring options with regard to the balance of the containerized cargo which is unaffected by the fire and says it will advise further on this aspect as soon as feasible.

On January 3, 2019 the Yantian Express and its cargo suffered damage from a fire event on board. The ship was en-route from Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Halifax when the fire broke out about 800 nautical miles from the Canadian coast. Once the fire was under control it was re-directed to the Bahamas to unload the damaged cargo and assess overall damages.

More details are available on Hapag-Lloyd's website.
