Florida's Port Everglades celebrates historic cargo record
Port Everglades announced that it reached a record high in and the fifth year that Port Everglades exceeded one-million TEUs. The port's fiscal years run from October 1 through September 30.
"We've enjoyed a robust growth period and are moving forward with significant investments to maximize the use of our land, cranes and berth space," said Port Everglades Chief Executive & Port Director Steve Cernak.
Port officials attribute the growth to Florida's increasing consumer population and shipping activity from Northern Europe. In addition to containerized cargo, the Port experienced a 2 percent increase in bulk and breakbulk cargo tonnage, which are mostly cement, steel rebar and other building materials.
In the next five years, Port Everglades is investing nearly $1 billion in infrastructure improvements to increase cargo volumes. Expansion projected include adding new cargo berths, installing new Super Post-Panamax container gantry cranes, increasing the lift capacity on existing cranes, and deepening and widening the Port's navigation channels.
