Possible strike by Port of Montreal tugboat captains
The tug captains of Océan remorquage Montréal, one of the three companies that provide towing vessels in the Port of Montreal, unanimously rejected the latest employer offers. The union already has a unanimous strike mandate to exercise at the time deemed appropriate.
According to a union statement the negotiations stumble mainly on wages, as Ocean tugboat captains would be lagging behind the rest of the industry. "We always want to negotiate a good contract, to the satisfaction of our members, but the employer must grasp the message of our members and readjust at the bargaining table," said union representative Luc Laberge.
According to the union, if nothing moves at the bargaining table, pressure tactics are imminent, within 72 hours of a strike notice. Ocean's tugboat captains are members of Syndicat des Métallos Local 9599.
