Flights in and out of Canadian airports decreased 1.3% in August

Statistics Canada announced that there were 549,354 aircraft take-offs and landings in August at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations, and decrease of 1.3% compared with the 556,485 movements in August 2017.

The federal agency says a decrease in itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) contributed to the year-over-year decline, while local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased. Itinerant movements were down 2.7% to 405,178 while local movements rose 2.9% to 144,176.

Domestic itinerant movements (within Canada) declined 3.6% year over year to 342,816 in August. Transborder movements (between Canada and the United States) rose 1.6% to 45,706 movements, while other international traffic was up 6.3% to 16,656 movements.

In August, 10 airports accounted for 38.4% of total activity. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, the nation's busiest airport, reported 43,958 movements, an increase of 1.0% compared with August 2017. This was followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia, which reported 34,234 movements (-3.9%) and Calgary International, Alberta, with 22,996 movements (+8.7%).
