EU moves towards free trade agreements with Vietnam and New Zealand
The European Commission announced its approval of the free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Vietnam, paving the way for the agreement's signature and conclusion.
In the following steps, the European Council (heads of state of member countries) was forwarded the agreement for signature and conclusion. Once authorised by the Council, the agreement will be signed and presented to the European Parliament for consent. Once the European Parliament has given its consent, the trade agreement can then be concluded by the Council and enter into force.
In other trade developments, EU negotiators were in Wellington, New Zealand from October 8 to 12, 2018 for the second round of negotiations for a trade agreement.
The Europeans report that the talks were held in a constructive atmosphere and that during the round the teams made progress across the board. The EU has now shared proposals with the New Zealanders covering almost all areas of the agreement.
The third round is scheduled to take place in Brussels in February 2019.
