U.S. duties on additional products from China to begin September 24
After a first phase of additional duties on Chinese goods that began on July 6, and a second phase which began August 23, the Government of the United States announced that another $200 billion worth of Chinese imports that will be subject to additional tariffs.
The additional tariffs will be effective starting September 24, 2018, and initially will be in the amount of 10 percent. Starting January 1, 2019, the level of the additional tariffs will increase to 25 percent.
The new list contains 5,745 full or partial lines of the original 6,031 tariff lines that were on a proposed list of Chinese imports.
The American Administration claims the extra duty is in retaliation to "acts, policies, and practices" by the Government of China which, according tot the United States Trade Representative, are "unreasonable or discriminatory and burden or restrict U.S. commerce."
Canadian exporters should note that they could be affected by these duties if they export to the U.S. any goods that were imported from China.
