Official inauguration of new Sault Ste. Marie port of entry
The Government of Canada officially opened the new and improved Sault Ste. Marie port of entry on August 15, 2018.
The Federal Government invested $51 million into this larger facility. It replaces the facility built in 1962 and is more than four times the size of the old facility.
The infrastructure improvements involved the complete renovation and expansion of the entire Canadian plaza, including an expansion of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) travellers' facility, the secondary examination facilities, and better roadways.
The first phase, completed in the fall of 2015, was the expansion of the site infrastructure, the widening of the bridge's north access ramp, the construction of a new Duty Free shop, and new maintenance garage.
The second phase, substantially completed in December of 2017, involved constructing a new CBSA traffic and commercial building and the addition of new and replacement of existing primary inspection lanes, which included the provision of Nexus and tour buses.
