Flights in and out of Canadian airports increased 8.9% in May

Statistics Canada announced that there were 570,697 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in April, compared with 524,165 movements in May 2017, an increase of 8.9%.

The federal agency says an increase in both itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) and local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) contributed to the year-over-year increase. Itinerant movements grew 7.4% to 391,737 and local movements were up 12.2% to 178,960.

Domestic itinerant movements (within Canada) rose 7.9% year over year to 335,863 in May. Transborder movements (between Canada and the United States) rose 3.5% to 41,843 movements, while other international traffic increased 8.0% to 14,031 movements.

In May, 10 airports accounted for 36.5% of total activity. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, the nation's busiest airport, reported 41,006 movements, up 6.1% compared with May 2017. This was followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia, which reported 29,051 movements (+2.3%) and Boundary Bay, British Columbia, with 23,510 movements (+20.8%). Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International saw 20,409 movements (+5.9%).
