Ocean carriers to add low water surcharge on shipments to/from Montreal

Ocean carriers have announced that they are implementing, or about to implement, low water surcharges on shipments to and from Montreal as the water level of the St. Lawrence River goes through a seasonal drop.

The carriers justify the surcharge by claiming that they have to carry less freight in order to reduce ship draft.

The latest projections from the Canadian Coast Guard do not show any foreseeable improvement in the water levels in the near future.
