Global container freight index continues its upward trend
The Container Throughput Index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) continues its upward trend despite growing trade policy conflicts.
In May 2018, it increased from a 131.1 points to 133.1 points. The institutes note that it is still slightly below its record value reached in January this year.
The index is based on data continuously collected from world container ports by ISL as part of its market monitoring. Because large parts of international merchandise trade are transported by ship, the development of port handling is a good indicator for world trade.
