EU and Chile complete third round of negotiations to modernize FTA
Negotiators from the European Union (EU) and Chile met in Brussels from May 28 to June 1 for the 3rd round of negotiations for a new, modernised trade agreement.
Over the course of the round the negotiating teams discussed all the issues covered by the agreement, such as market access for goods, services and investment, technical barriers to trade, intellectual property rights, including geographical indications, competition and subsidies, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade and sustainable development, as well as trade and gender.
According to the European Commission, talks were held in a constructive spirit, and there was good progress made in most areas of the negotiations. The EU tabled texts for this round on sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade and gender equality and trade and sustainable development.
The existing EU-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force in February 2003.
