European Union to start trade negotiations with Australia and New Zealand
The Council of the European Union (EU) agreed this week to open negotiations towards free trade agreements with Australia and New Zealand.
European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström said: "This is great news. We look forward to adding Australia and New Zealand to the EU's ever-growing circle of close trading partners."
Ms. Malmström will travel to New Zealand in June for the formal launch of negotiations with that country. The first rounds of talks is set down for July in Brussels.
"I look forward to welcoming Commissioner Malmström to New Zealand next month. I share her view that we are already close in terms of our values and our open, global outlook," said New Zealand's Trade and Export Growth Minister David Parker.
In Australia, the Turnbull Government said: "We look forward to welcoming EU Trade Commissioner Malmström to Australia next month to formally launch negotiations."
