Conductors and locomotive engineers give strike notice to CP Rail

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), which represents some 3000 conductors and locomotive engineers at Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), issued notice of strike to be effective 0001 (EST) April 21, 2018.

The union said it will continue to meet with the CP bargaining committee, with plans to continue through to the deadline, but it intends to walk out if negotiations fail.

In a news release CP said it continues to work closely with the TCRC and made significant movement in bargaining this week, presenting the TCRC with new progressive three and five-year agreement options.

In a notice to customers CP said it has commenced and will continue to execute a safe and structured shutdown of its train operations in Canada, if and when the employees walk out.

A strike would have a huge impact on freight movement throughout Canada. Customers with goods transported via CP Rail can expect delays.

The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2017. Negotiations began on November 16, 2017, and federal mediators were brought in on January 29, 2018.
