Sixth round of NAFTA negotiations ends with some progress
Canada, Mexico and the United States concluded, in Montreal on January 29, the sixth round of renegotiation and modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
According to news reports, negotiators reached agreement on a NAFTA chapter focusing on anti-corruption, and were nearing completion on several other sections.
In a closing statement United States Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer said: "To conclude, some real headway was made here today. The United States views NAFTA as a very important agreement. We are committed to moving forward. I am hopeful progress will accelerate soon. We will work very hard between now and the beginning of the next round, and we hope for major breakthroughs during that period. We will engage with both Mexico and Canada urgently, and we will go where these negotiations take us."
The three countries agreed to two more NAFTA negotiating rounds, in late February in Mexico City and late March or early April in Washington, D.C.
