Canada launches free trade negotiations with the Pacific Alliance
International Trade Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the first round of free trade negotiations between Canada and the Pacific Alliance which was taking place from October 23 to 27, in Cali, Colombia.
Canada already has comprehensive stand-alone free trade agreements with each of the four members of the Alliance, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
Negotiations on a free trade agreement with the Pacific Alliance as a bloc offers the opportunity to build links between overlapping bilateral agreements that would otherwise operate independently.
Canada's total merchandise trade with the Pacific Alliance was more than $48 billion in 2016. The four member countries account for more than 75 percent of Canada's two-way merchandise trade with the whole Latin America region.
