EU and Mexico report progress in talks to upgrade trade agreement
The fifth round of negotiations between the European Union (EU) and Mexico took place in Brussels at the end of September. In total 21 negotiating groups met, including on trade in goods, services, technical barriers to trade and sustainable development.
The European Commission reports that there were substantive discussions in all areas and negotiation groups. The talks focused on the text proposals for the trade chapter as well as on the market access offers on goods, services and public procurement that were exchanged in July. Some groups advanced more than others but overall there was good progress.
The overall objective of the ongoing negotiations between the EU and Mexico is to adapt the existing agreement negotiated two decades ago to the reality of today's global trade. Both sides are committed to make the agreement ready for political conclusion before the end of this year.
The sixth round will take place in Mexico City from 25 November to 1 December.
