Canada-European Union FTA takes effect, eliminating customs duties on most goods

The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) provisionally took effect on September 21.

Virtually all of the economically significant parts of the free trade agreement (FTA) are now in effect, including tariff elimination, new quotas, service commitments, temporary entry commitments and government procurement obligations.

With this provisional application 98% of tariff items are now duty-free for originating goods, whether it's wind turbines, timber or medical devices heading to the European Union or French wine, Italian vinegar or German tools coming to Canada.

The remaining elements of CETA, including provisions related to investment protection and dispute resolution, will be applied once all EU member states have ratified the Agreement, and it is fully brought into force in Canada and the European Union.
