Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports were up 4.8% in June
Statistics Canada announced that there were 530,182 aircraft take-offs and landings in June at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations, compared with 505,884 movements in June 2016.
Both itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) and local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) contributed to the year-over-year gain in June 2017. Itinerant movements rose 3.0% to 380,254 while local movements increased 9.6% to 149,928.
According to the federal agency, domestic itinerant movements (within Canada) rose to 324,166 in June, up 3.4% from the same month in 2016. In addition, other international traffic increased 6.2% to 14,011 movements. These gains more than offset a slight decrease in transborder movements (between Canada and the United States), which edged down 0.9% to 42,077.
In June 2017, 10 airports accounted for 37.5% of total activity. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, the nation's busiest airport, reported 40,689 movements, up 2.3% from June 2016. This was followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia, which recorded 30,280 (+1.5%) movements and Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, Quebec, with 20,856 (+3.4%) movements.
