Consultations on possible free trade negotiations with the Pacific Alliance
The Government of Canada announced that it is seeking the views of the Canadian public and interested Canadian stakeholders on the scope of potential negotiations regarding a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Pacific Alliance.
The Pacific Alliance is a regional integration initiative created in 2011 by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. In May 2016, the Pacific Alliance removed 92% of tariffs on goods traded between members. The rest of the tariffs will be removed by 2020.
Canada already has comprehensive stand-alone free trade agreements with each of the four members of the Alliance.
Negotiations on an FTA with the Pacific Alliance as a bloc offers the opportunity to build links between overlapping bilateral agreements that would otherwise operate independently.
