NAFTA negotiations between Canada, the U.S. & Mexico to begin on August 16
The United States Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, announced the beginning of negotiations to amend to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The first round of these negotiations, between the United States, Canada and Mexico, will take place in Washington, D.C. from August 16 - 20, 2017.
The American Government released its negotiating objectives (pdf) on Monday.
Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland, welcomed "the opportunity to modernize NAFTA to reflect new realities - and to integrate progressive, free, and fair approaches to trade and investment."
"When negotiations begin, we will be ready to work with our partners to modernize NAFTA, while defending Canada's national interest and standing up for our values," said the minister in a statement to the media.
