Canada and EU will provisionally apply CETA in September
On the margins of the G20 meeting in Germany last week, Canada's Prime Minister and the President of the European Commission issued a joint statement announcing the starting date for provisional implementation of the Canada-European Union (EU) Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA):
"Meeting at the G20 in Hamburg, reconfirming our joint commitment to the rules-based international trading system, we agreed to set the date of September 21, 2017 to start the provisional application of the agreement, thus allowing for all the necessary implementing measures to be taken before that date."
"The agreement will now be provisionally applied and will enter definitively into force once the parliaments in all Member States of the EU ratify the text according to their respective domestic constitutional requirements."
Most of the economically significant parts of the agreement - including tariffs, quotas, service commitments, temporary entry commitments and government procurement obligations - will be applied as of September 21.
