Five states account for over 40% of Canadian trade with the U.S.

Statistics Canada reported this week that the value of Canada's total merchandise trade (exports plus imports) with the United States on a customs basis reached $673 billion in 2016.

The top five states for trade with Canada are Michigan, Illinois, California, New York and Texas and they accounted for $286 billion in trade, 42% of the total trade between the two countries.

The driver of trade between Canada and Michigan is the auto industry and the oil industry accounted for most of the trade with Illinois.

Motor vehicles as well as fruits and vegetables were important components of trade with California and unwrought gold was the top commodity exported to New York. Shipments of crude oil were the largest part of Canadian trade with Texas.
