World Trade Organization reappoints AzevÍdo as Director-General
At a meeting of the organization's General Council on February 28, members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreed by consensus to appoint Roberto AzevÍdo for a second four-year term as Director-General. Mr AzevÍdo's second term will begin on September 1, 2017
Mr AzevÍdo confirmed his willingness to serve a second term in the role in a letter to WTO members in November 2016 at the outset of the selection process. He was the only candidate nominated for the post when the process closed on December 31, 2016.
In thanking members for their support, Mr AzevÍdo said he believed the WTO "is on the right path. We have achieved a great deal over the last few years. The WTO is stronger today than it was in 2013."
"But we can do much more - particularly for the smaller players and those who feel cut off from the economic benefits of trade. We must build a more inclusive trading system. I look forward to working with you all to that end."
Roberto AzevÍdo, of Brazil, took the helm of the World Trade Organization on September 1st 2013 as the sixth Director-General, taking over from Pascal Lamy.
