European Parliament Trade Committee approves Canada-EU trade agreement
The EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was approved by the European Parliament's International Trade Committee on Tuesday, one of the important steps for final ratification in Europe.
The Agreement will next be put to a vote by the European Union's (EU) Parliament at its February plenary session in Strasbourg. If Parliament approves the CETA deal, it could apply provisionally from as early as April 2017.
The provisional application is expected to bring well over 90 per cent of the deal into force after approval by the Canadian and European parliaments, even though it will also need to be ratified by the EU's national and regional parliaments.
In Canada, implementation bill C-30 is undergoing parliamentarian consideration.
