New requirement for the importation of fresh tomatoes

imageThe Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced this week that, effective June 28, 2010, shipments of tomato fruit from Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Syrian Arab Republic and Turkey will be subject to new requirements.

Shipment will have to be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate with an additional declaration stating: "This consignment originated from a place where Tuta absoluta is known not to occur and was inspected and found free of Tuta absoluta".

Shipments not meeting this requirement will be refused entry to Canada. The phytosanitary import requirement for tomatoes and the complete list of regulated countries are available in the directive D-10-01 (http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/protect/dir/d-10-01e.shtml).
