Panama reopens border to Canadian cattle and bovine genetics

Panama announced the re-opening of its market to Canadian breeding cattle and expanding market access to bovine genetics. Panama had been shutting out Canadian cattle since 2003, when cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) where discovered in Canada.

image"The Government of Canada is pleased with Panama's decision to re-open its market to Canadian cattle exports," said International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan. "This is great news for Canada's cattle industry. Our government will continue to work to ensure full access to important markets around the world for Canadian producers."

In 2009, the value of Canadian agriculture and food exports to Panama was $23.5 million. Canada and Panama signed a free trade agreement last May 14. Once implemented, the agreement will open doors to Canadian farmers and exporters with improved market access, bringing benefits to a wide range of sectors, including agriculture and agri-food.
